The City of Tulsa is currently in the process of rebidding its trash and recycling hauling system, and in the process revamping the financial and logistical infrastructure of the system.  A lot of misinformation has been circulated, and thus I have compiled this information to help clarify some of the arguments in favor of the proposed system

I truly believe that the changes proposed by the TARE Board are necessary to create a more sustainable city with a competitive business climate for Tulsa.  We need to bring our city more in-line with modern best practices from around the country.

Do you talk about climate change in Oklahoma? I generally talk about energy efficiency cost savings and diversifying our energy portfolio. The New York Times just ran a really interesting article about how some Kansas towns have reduced their energy use by 5% by focussing on these more broadly appealing concepts. Email me if you know of similar stories of strong climate action in "red" states using different messaging!

I just returned from two great conferences in Denver: one for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and one for the American College and Universities Presidents Climate Commitment. I made three presentations while at the AASHE conference! From the other sessions that I attended, it seems that universities especially need help measuring or managing their commuting and campus forests. Also, we are starting to already hear the increasing emphasis on water that everyone has been predicting!

Just finished teaching about the importance of greenhouse gas inventories in managing an institution's environmental footprint at the UNCF's Minority Serving Institutions Capacity Building Workshop. It's amazing how many millions of dollars have been funneled into beautiful new LEED buildings before a campus has measured their current footprint and addressed the low hanging fruit of energy efficiency upgrades!
